DEVASTING NEWS: Bursaries slashed for 2021 trainees. What is the GOVERNMENT THINKING OF?

The government, for a number of years now, has not come anywhere near meeting their recruitment targets. There is still a shortage of teachers nationally despite the upturn in applications from the April 2020 lockdown. So, in order to ensure that teacher recruitment is back up to sufficient numbers, the government withdraws the bursary to all English, Arts and Humanities subjects, cuts the bursary payments to core subjects and removes the early careers payments, stops anyone from outside the UK being able to access any sort of funding for teacher training and tells schools that if they want to offer a salaried position they can only access grant funding (to offset their costs)  in those subjects that still have a bursary:- at which point my strong advice is to follow the safer, non-salaried route as you will be financially better off once tax rebates and other factors are taken into account.

Through these difficult times, MVTP and our partner KMT will support you whatever way we can with guidance on applying for a student loan and any other financial benefits that you may be entitled to. E.G. Childcare allowance.

Below are the confirmed bursaries available to School Direct Non-Salaried teacher trainees for courses commencing September 2021.

PLEASE NOTE:

A)  School Direct Salaried trainees are not able to access the bursaries listed below.

B) Scholarships, where applicable, are available to those with a 1st or 2:1 degree classification. Those with a 2:2 will be considered only in exceptional circumstances.

C) All EU nationals are now NOT able to access bursaries or loans
