Kent and Medway Training (KMT) is a highly regarded and successful Schools Centred Initial Teacher Training Provider (SCITT) which has been training teachers for over 25 years..We work in collaboration with a variety of schools, including those within the Medway Valley Training Partnership. With MVTP we offer training which leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and our partnership arrangement with The University of Leeds Beckett gives our trainees the opportunity to access a PGCE Top-Up qualification, while they train or in the first two years of teaching, which offers Masters Level credits.
KMT provides training in General Primary teaching and in a range of Secondary subjects. We recruit jointly with schools, which ensures that all trainees:
• establish strong links with their “home school” before training begins;
• benefit from a training placement in their home school from September until February;
• complement this with a placement in a contrasting school;
• return to their home school to complete their training by the end of June.
Trainees learn to teach in the classroom, guided by experienced, current practitioners, which enables them to develop their own skills and techniques, equipping them for their future career. An exceptionally high number of KMT School Direct trainees gain their first teaching post in the schools in which they train, ensuring a smooth transition into their first year as a Newly-Qualified Teacher (NQT). Building on the success of Schools Led Initial Teacher Training, the KMT Consortium has expanded to include over 50 Primary and Secondary schools throughout the Medway, Maidstone, Gravesend, Tonbridge and Dartford areas as well as training teachers in Special schools.
Regular KMT centre-based training at the Leigh Academy in Dartford is now supplemented by more local training opportunities within three regional hubs including training based at The Medway Valley Training Partnership’s Thomas Aveling school, Rochester. Trainees spend four days a week in placement schools to gain practical teaching experience. They also participate in school-based training programmes. The fifth day is dedicated to either KMT Professional or Subject Specific studies.
KMT’s Professional Studies programme of lectures, workshops and tutorials supports the development of generic teaching skills. There are also valuable opportunities to meet fellow trainees in specific Subject Studies sessions to develop skills, knowledge and understanding to support the teaching of a specific subject or age range. Alongside their time in the classroom, trainees also complete Reflective Professional Journal (RPJ) tasks. This gives trainees the opportunity to explore educational theory and research and to reflect on their own developing practice. It also enables trainees to meet the Teaching Standards for the award of QTS.
Training with KMT gives trainees an excellent opportunity to become a good or outstanding teacher in the future. In 2016/17 99% of teachers trained by KMT schools were graded as good or outstanding and 98% are now employed as teachers, the majority within KMT schools. In September 2018, over 170 trainees will begin their training with KMT; the majority of these were recruited jointly with KMT schools. The government have acknowledged that the future of Initial Teacher Training is via the School Direct route, and KMT is set to expand still further as our schools request more training places in the future.
