The Rochester Grammar School’s mission is encapsulated in three words: “transforming life chances.” We are a proud International Baccalaureate World School, and have been since 2007, with many students choosing our IB Programme, and going on to attend outstanding universities and achieve amazing results in life.

We offer the IB Programme because of everything it stands for, it aims to develop internationally minded people, and it boasts the IB learner profile which describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success, they imply a commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others and the world around them. We promote this philosophy and aim to develop learners who are happy and caring as well as academically successful. We aim to develop the whole learner through our exciting programme of extra-curricular opportunities as the experiences of our students do not end in the classroom.

An IB learner strives to be inquiringknowledgeableandcaring, to name a few of the attributes. In addition, we encourage and value academic, creative, sporting and responsible behaviours through our exciting offer of extra-curricular opportunities – learning doesn’t end in the classroom. The IB isn’t new, it has been established since 1968, and students who study the Diploma are highly valued by universities both in the UK and abroad, take a look through our top reasons the IB might be right for you.

RGS is part of the award-winning Thinking Schools Academy Trust (TSAT), we share a commitment “to provide on outstanding school with an ethos of excellence and high expectations; underpinned by the principles of a fully integrated thinking school.”

We are passionate, not just about what our students learn, but how they learn and how they grow in confidence, independence and with critical thinking. The curriculum vision here at RGS is metacognitive, we focus on developing our students’ awareness and understanding of their own thought process by using Thinking Tools.

Thinking Schools Academy Trust are unique in their focus on ensuring that students are equipped with the tools they need to reflect on the knowledge they learn in life.  As a result, the Rochester Grammar School is recognised by Exeter University as one of the few Advanced Thinking Schools in the country and is pioneering the use of a cognitive approach to education and student learning.

Our broad and balanced curriculum, which is traditional and academic, provides students with the cultural capital required to build the foundations of a successful life. Plus, our curriculum and assessment model is based on the latest cognitive science, encouraging the building of rich schema and a cumulative approach to education that best supports deeper, life-long learning.
